EAST COUNTY — A fire that had burned more than 800 acres by Friday night was caused by two stranded illegal immigrants who set a signal fire for help, Cal Fire officials said. Dubbed the Cowboy Fire, the blaze began about 1:15 p.m. Thursday near the Pacific Crest Trail southwest of Lake Morena. It burned in an area between Campo and Potrero. The two illegal immigrants called C4, Mexico’s emergency distress system, on Thursday and said they had been lost for two days and were dehydrated, said Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik. They said they were going to light a...

Democratic Party front group Media Matters for America has been loyally defending First Lady Michelle Obama's luxurious Spanish vacation this week even as other liberals concede the Obama administration made a politically insensitive call in signing off on the trip.Today, Media Matters attacked Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit/Pajamas Media for his critique of Michelle Obama's trip. The headline of the attack piece: Michelle Obama derangement syndrome: Instapundit posts pic of First Lady as Marie AntoinetteNot only does the headline reinforce the growing meme that Michelle Obama is acting like a rich pig, but upon opening the article one is confronted with...

Some cities in California are so bloated in debt and other problems they are considering dissolution. Mercury News asks is this The End of Half Moon Bay? Between budget losses and lawsuit payments, Half Moon Bay's financials have become so dire that if a local sales tax measure doesn't pass this November, officials say they may have to disincorporate. City leaders have been using the "D" word for a few weeks now as they try to persuade voters to pass Measure K, a one-cent sales tax increase that would help the city balance its budget with an extra infusion of...

CA: Still more grim news on pension front

The latest stark confirmation that California’s public employee compensation practices are unsustainable and have been horribly managed came this week with the release of a report that warned the University of California’s retirement system faced a $20 billion shortfall. The report contained this astounding fact: Employees and UC didn’t pay a penny into the system for a 20-year span that only ended earlier this year. Why? Apparently, because there was a presumption the system was adequately funded. In a recent letter to employees, UC President Mark Yudof blamed this massive oversight on state officials. He said he will work with...

Jerry Brown says he'd be a frugal governorCarla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer September 3, 2010 07:33 PM (09-03) 19:33 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Jerry Brown said Friday that if elected governor he would have to "do things that labor doesn't like," including cutting pension benefits for public employees and asking labor leaders to "put everything on the table" to get California's bloated budget under control. "If you're looking for frugality, I'm your man," the California attorney general and former two-term governor said in a meeting with The Chronicle's editorial board. When he was governor from 1975 to 1983, he said,...

Unions Prevent Kids from Learning in L.A.

The L.A. Times has been publishing a great series about how the city's schools have been dropping the ball on education. Specifically, the Times points out that the L.A. schools district has had at its disposal stats that could have helped it to engineer a better education policy for its students but has ignored these stats. Why have they ignored these stats? Fear of unions. The Times has a database of the effectiveness of nearly 6,000 L.A. area teachers. These findings, the Times informs us, were based on a method called "value-added analysis. It is a method that is beginning...

Carlyfornia, Here We Come

Politics: California's Senate debate was between someone who knows how to pull a wagon and someone who wants everyone to ride. The choice is creating wealth and jobs or redistributing wealth while destroying jobs. California hasn't elected a Republican senator since Pete Wilson in 1988, but if Wednesday's debate and recent polls are any indication, the political sea change of 2010 may be about to wash up on Golden State beaches. The debate wasn't so much conservative vs. liberal as between freedom and dependency, with incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer attacking former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as serving the interests of...
