The navy has scuttled plans to make the USS Saratoga a museum in favor of another more modern aircraft carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy. The Saratoga, now docked in Newport, R.I., will almost certainly be scrapped. Six ships have been named Saratoga in American naval history – three sailing ships from the Revolution, War of 1812 and Civil War, respectively, a cruiser and two aircraft carriers. "Every ship named Saratoga has had a strong presence in the history of this nation," said Larry Gordon of Wilton, the unofficial USS Saratoga historian. "It isn’t like we’re losing the ship. You...

Stories of left wing tolerance in Maine. (must read but keep a barf bag near)

Lately I've been thinking of four left wing incidents that happened in Maine over the course of two years. I feel I should get them off my chest I think some of them would be interesting and I think others should know about them. The first one involves an incident that took place in the Bangor metro area two years ago. This freind of mine and his family were having trouble. He had difficulty getting by and he worked at Edwards Shop'n'save in Hampden outside Bangor. He was on food stamps and his wife was laid off and couldn't get...

LONDON (AFP) - Police have revealed they were investigating the dumping of a pig's head outside a mosque on the first full day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The head was found outside the Jamia Mosque in Newport, southeast Wales, on Saturday. The Koran strictly forbids Muslims to eat pork. "We treat all incidents of hate crime seriously and are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to identify the offender," said Gwent Police Superintendent Simon Prince on Friday. Nobody at the mosque was available for comment but Sheikh Mohammad Thair Ullah, the chairman of the nearby Shah...

I hope it is OK to do a vanity for this but I read a funny/interesting article on the Cincinnati Enquirer's website which can't be posted on FR. Dems were booted from a Starbucks in Newport, KY. Thought some of you may be interested. If you go to www.Yahoo.com and enter "Starbucks in Newport" you'll see a pair of articles. I couldn't locate the article anywhere else but the Enquirer's website.

CA: Residents accused of leveling Newport dunes (bulldozed in the dark of night)

NEWPORT BEACH – Moving a pile of sand could cost several homeowners here an even bigger pile of cash. The California Coastal Commission on Monday accused five residents with beachfront property of flattening protected sand dunes to improve their ocean views. The commission is ordering the dunes rebuilt – a process that could reach into the six-figure range. Considered important habitat for threatened birds, the dunes were allegedly seen as an obstruction by residents whose ocean vistas were blocked by the 3- to 6-foot-tall dunes. "Sand dunes are loved and hated," Newport Assistant City Manager Dave Kiff said. "The residents...

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2005) -- When Marine 1st Sgt. John S. Kob returned home from Iraq in June, his family was ready to receive him with open arms, but 140,000 arms could get exhausting. Kob’s unit, 1st Battalion 1st Marine Regiment, was adopted by the city of Newport Beach in December 2003, after the unit’s first return from Iraq. Newport Beach’s residents have provided everything from care packages for deployed Marines to emergency funds for families visiting their wounded heroes in medical facilities across the globe. The city's most recent gesture occurred Sept. 29 when they hosted a...
